Foster Ettinger will be dead inside a week. He trudges west through the endless pinewood expanse of rural Missouri, tugging at the reins of a gunshot horse and peering over his shoulder with growing desperation. Inside his saddlebag rests a fortune in stolen cash. Behind him rides the host of furious men he stole it from.

Thirty years later, his son Isaac drifts through the underbelly of prohibition-era St. Louis a broken man. Dismissed from his position as a detective, and embittered by a lifetime of comparisons to the legendary father who abandoned him, Isaac leads a solitary existence hunting bounties for anyone with the cash to pay.

But when he receives a cryptic job offer from the man who killed his father years before, Isaac soon finds himself in an unforeseen confrontation with his quarry that will force him to reconsider his mercenary ways--and the past he's spent his entire life trying to escape.

An unrelenting work of swift violence and stark philosophy, The Cinder Field intertwines the tale of an unlikely folk hero with that of the son he would never know--two desperate men parted by the span of decades, forced to flee the wrath of the same ruthless murderer, and unknowingly bound by the grim truth that for men like them, redemption is rarely bought with anything but blood.

An interesting read…the author made sure you felt like you were part of the story with his attention to detail. Classic story of the son coming to terms with choices his father made and how they influenced his own life choices whether he liked it or not.

a diffacult start. however the author's skill at description made me feel i was actually a sepectator of events. even more than watching a movie. well developed characters. a well established "travel through time" story line.
The author paces the novel very well, picking up steam as it goes to a finish I found it hard to put down at the end. The dual story lines each provide a great deal of suspense, and the descriptiveness paints vivid pictures to help the reader visualize the story. Overall, one of the best books I've read this year.
Deepest story I’ve read in a long time. A slow read but very thoughtful. The end will keep you guessing
This novel got my attention from the very first chapter. I really enjoyed this author's writing style and descriptive narratives. I felt as though I were walking through the story myself and couldn't wait to see what would happen to each character next. I'm looking forward to reading his next book.
The beginning is hard reading but if you persevere you will be rewarded with a beautifully written book. At times almost like reading poetry. Loved it!
