Long ago, a wizard who valued power and control more than the life, walked the planet. Killing and conquering to suit his own needs, he plunged the entire world into chaos. With the assistance of the Elves of Ferrindale, the conclave of Havenbrook creates seven orbs to imprison the wizard and stop his rampage. After the battle, the orbs were scattered throughout the world. An elite order of soldiers exists to protect them, known as the Keepers of the Orbs, and Raythum is their leader.
If the seven orbs are combined, the prison will unlock and the wizard will walk free, plunging the world into ruin. Raythum knows this is his brother’s intention, and he follows him 130 years into the past. With two orbs already in his brother’s control, Raythum must unite all of the nations of Askabar to stand against him.
The only problem? He is half a continent away, and must use his relationship with the Elves and Dwarves—a relationship built in the future that doesn’t exist yet—to reach his brother before he captures any of the remaining orbs. With time running out, Raythum must decide.

This book was very good. I have not read this author before and I enjoyed this book. I could not put it down. I love a good Fantasy book. * I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review*
After reading the prequel to this, The Unknown Man, you come into it with a feeling of what to expect from the Author. Then you quickly realize the author has taken his writing to the next step and you cannot put the book down. The story telling is great and even the flipping between sides of the story are transitioned seamlessly. I feel more connected to the key players of the story. The writing is great, story is wonderful and is definitely a quality read that I would recommend. I have a hard time keeping my interest in books but this one I never wanted to put down.
This book is the first of its genre that I could actually sit and read without putting it down. My children love the dragon and knight stories and I am honestly the hopeless romantic, comedy lover. The steady flow of the storyline combined with the character interaction paints a picture vivid enough to envision the events taking place. Sibling rivalry, a couple in love and the fate of the world at stake. Throw in some undead and what more could you ask for from a good book that you can't stop talking about? I would definitely recommend this book and believe it is age appropriate for my teenage sons to enjoy as well.
After reading the prequel for this book, "The Unknown Man", I was really hooked into the style of this author. He is an excellent storyteller. And the plot he came up with is amazingly entertaining. Full of action, this book describes the story of Raythum Stormdragon, the heir of Havenbrook. All the characters he created are full of life. The environment is richly described. Our hero swore an oath to protect the orbs, created to keep a very powerful wizard imprisoned. But his older brother moved to the "dark side" and is trying to re-unit the orbs and set free that wizard. All the conflicts and battles involving dwarves, elves, and other races are very intensely described and it feels like we are in the middle of the action.
Kudos to the author! This book has all the ingredients to be an instant best seller. Romance, time travel, heroic battles, friendship, dragons, elves, dwarves, all the good stuff that will keep you entertained for hours!
I recommend this book to the permanent library of any reader that likes a very well written fantasy.
Good read pulls you in and doesn't let go . Recommend to anyone familiar with all genre. Look forward to more! Please

What a story! “The Rising Past – The Keepers of the Orbs†is an entertaining read, full of action and excitement as well as mythical characters and places. Lokan Stormdragon is the reigning king of Havenbrook (a country within the continent of Askabar) and has two sons. The eldest son, Tirell, has a serious personality problem and dabbles in the “black artsâ€. This concerns his father, because it is a Havenbrook tradition that the eldest son inherits the role of king. Lokan decides that instead of blindly handing his kingdom over to his first son, there will be a contest between Tirell and his second son, Raythum to determine who will be the future king. Raythum, who is the opposite of Tirell and is a responsible and noble person, accepts the contest and is challenged by virtual adventures that are generated by an object called an orb, to test his mettle. Here, the story really takes off as Raythum partakes in a variety of adventures from tragic wars, to time travel, to love and lost loves, to becoming a dragon rider. The author J.G. Gatewood, provides us with rich characters that are believable and interesting. Havenbrook, and all of Askabar for that matter, are creatively described and invoke visions of mystical places and people. Gatewood hints to us at the end of the story that there may be more adventures to come, and if there are… I’ll be the first in line to take the ride. Get it. You’ll like it.
