A few years ago, a neighbor asked me to help her with a computer problem. I said to give me a minute or so to go home and grab a diagnostic disk. (Yes, it was a 3 1/2" floppy disk. The program was probably an original version of Norton Utilities. Okay - so it was more than a few years ago.)
I did come back in a minute or two as promised, but my neighbor was shocked. Really shocked. Wide eyes, gaping mouth shocked. Though I had always been the reliable type, she expected that the few minutes I had promised really meant a half hour or more, if I would return at all. It wasn't my character that the neighbor doubted, but my ability to get the tool I needed so quickly. She literally pointed to the disk in my hand and said, "How did you find that?!?"
At the moment, her confusion didn’t really resonate. What did she mean, How did I find that? I found it because I knew it was in the place where I kept my disks. Then I entered her home. Her place was far from neat and tidy. It was a jumbled mess of piles. Piles of mail. Piles of magazines and newspapers. And piles of laundry - clean or dirty, it was hard to tell the difference. They were all heaped in hills on the floor, on large tables, on small tables, and on upholstered chairs. In a bedroom which doubled as a home office, the sheets were in a crumpled hill on the bed that I guessed had never been made. Just as my neighbor was shocked at my ability to find my things, I wondered how she could ever find anything. She couldn't.
I wasn't particularly friendly with the neighbor other than to say good morning, or nice weather we're having. I think she only grabbed me that day out of desperation. And truthfully, after seeing the way she lived, I didn't want to become her crutch for solving every issue she had in her life. I had my own problems. So that day, I just turned my head to the computer, fixed the problem, said goodbye, and left. A year or so later I moved out of the area and never saw her again.
Years have passed but that time has remained in my mind, because I think, I never did answer her question. I have felt a pang of guilt ever since. It has been too many years to let the question go unanswered. So, with this book I attempt to answer the question, "How did you find that?"
