Each book is a wonder of original writing and plot twists. The main characters are complex and endearing. And the supporting cast is three dimensional and believable. The detail is rich and pulls you into their world, and you never want to leave. When you read one of the passages where Carivel is taming a horse you almost choke on the dust. There are male on male, BDSM, and Ménage a trois elements. This is the first book that I've ever read by this author. I was instantly sucked into a wonderfully detailed trial of three people in love. Most Ménage books that I've read do not go into the problems that the couple faces in everyday interactions with their neighbors and town. These books deal with problems in their relationships and how the relationships affect everyone around them. These books have also have their dark elements, as is to be expected when at war.
The audiobook is beautifully brought to life by the renowned Gwendolyn Druyor. Her portrayal of Carivel is spot on. Just how I had heard it on my head the first time I read the books. I love this series, it is the only series I have on audiobook. I now wait impatiently for the next book in the new series The Lion Mistress. That continues the tales of Eburos and her people.

This was a total surprise. I received this entire series through other authors and what a gift. I do like menage stories but this one blew me away. It was so different from anything I had ever read before and the detail of their mindsets, their feelings and their outlook on life was so unique. First of all it takes place in a time long ago. (I must admit I would have liked to know when that actually was but that is not revealed.) Secondly, it focuses on prejudice against; homosexuals, women and anything that is different from the norm. The way it is addressed is really unusual especially for the times that they were in and how backward the society was then. The three of them were way ahead of their time and were extremely brave. I do not want to give too much away because it will spoil the surprise even though other reviewers have done that already. The writing was very expressive and poignant but at times I thought that some of the wording was a little too contemporary. Other than that, I would recommend this book for anyone who is looking for something very different and interesting. Even if you are not into menage, this is a love story not an erotic novel.
This series is fantastic! I read the first book and was hooked after the first couple of chapters. I clicked the link at the end of the book so I could get to the free prequel. It was such a good story that I wrote R. A. Steffan to let her know how much I enjoyed it and that I couldn't wait to read the rest. That's a first because I've really never contacted an author before.
As I expected, the rest of the series was well written and satisfying. I loved the world that she created and the evolving story which was rich and complete. The characters were wonderfully interesting and engaging, not just the main characters but all of the supporting characters as well. I absolutely loved the relationship between Andoc, Carivel and Senovo. The non-traditional nature of their relationship, including the sexual twists, was really well woven into the story. I love the romantic and erotic aspects of the story, and I had a hard time putting down my kindle, reading into the wee hours of the night, during lunch, and rushing home to read again after dinner. I'm planning to go back to read it again because I am sure I missed some things the first time around since I was so eager to see how the series ended. I did end up receiving a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review, and I can honestly say that this is one of the best stories that I've read in a very long time. If you like a really well written book in the fantasy realm, with an interesting world, great characters, and steamy sex scenes that actually enhances a really well written, satisfying story, you should definitely get this series. The first story is free so you can get a sense of R. A. Steffan's writing style. If you like that book, you will not be disappointed with the rest of the series!
