When an urgent letter arrives in Caithness, Gregory Scott, the Earl of Bailey hurries to London believing his dearest relation is on her deathbed. Rory is appalled to find his presence is only needed to play-act as a fake fiancé for a friend of his cousin.
After the lady in question marries her true love, Rory is left unoccupied. Seeking out an old acquaintance, he discovers Lord Briden nearly penniless, mentally unstable, and entirely dependant upon his spinster daughter for the care and upkeep of their estate at Primrose.
The beautiful Lady Rosamund is part hoyden, part bluestocking, part servant. Wanting nothing to do with Society, her uncommon way of life spurs Rory into offering assistance, but Rosamund adamantly refuses. When Rory learns the lecherous lord next door is blackmailing Rosamund, he devises a scheme to help her whether she wants it or not.
The idea to find Rosamund a husband goes slightly awry, as Rory doesn’t bargain for falling in love with the enigmatic Lady. And when his plan turns up another beau for Rosamund, can Rory let her go?

Book 5 tells the story of Rory (cousin to Lady Olivia and Ancient Greek scholar) and Rosamund also known as Minnie (daughter of a Greek scholar and novel writer). Since he is in London and bored, Rory searches out Rosamund's father who he has corresponded with for 10 years only to find the family and manor house in bad shape. He tries to help. Rosamund is suspicious of him and they do not get along well. The scoundrel Stockton makes another appearance to complicate matters. One reviewer calls her a shrew; I don't agreed. She is overworked, has no future except caring for her ailing father, a brilliant mind ahead of her time, and without funds to care for her parents and home. Another reviewer thinks it unreasonable that she does all the chores that she does. It seems to me that throughout history until perhaps the last 100 years, many women cooked, cleaned, gardened, sewed, managed a household, and read or kept up a correspondence. Certainly my female ancestors on the prairie did. They didn't go to town or watch tv or play on tablets. When you have nothing, you work hard and become resourceful.
I am particularly fond of books about women with brilliant minds like Rosamund. If you do too, consider reading the series The Brothers Sinister by Courtney Milan especially The Countess Conspiracy and the Suffragette Scandal. They are racier than Anne Gallagher, but great women.
I love Rory. He is selfless and wants to do the right thing for Rosamund and her family.
I think A Wife for Winsbarren should come just before this, as it is referred to in this novel.
This series is about a group of men who are a little older than in some of the romances I have read. They have either served in the army or navy or had previous romances or family tragedies that put them off marriage. They are related as friends, brothers and cousins. I like how the stories fit together.
If you like sweet sometimes adventurous stories with no more than kissing these stories are for you. If you like stories about related characters, but with more spice, try The Stanton Brothers series by Vanessa Kelly.

The Earl Engagement The Reluctant Grooms Book 5 edition by Anne Gallagher Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
There are a few lose ends though. I would have liked to know what happened to the dog, Tuck, what happened to Lord Stockton and how come the heroines mother did not help more with the house work?
I love novels that have both drama and romance, and this book has it all and I enjoyed reading it very much. Maybe I ought to have given it five stars but because of the above things I think are not fully explained I keep to my five stars. See what you think.
I have enjoyed all Gallagher's stories, with some reservations. The author has interesting plotlines. A few of my reactions to this book
-probably not my favorite of Gallagher's stories, but not really for any reason I can pinpoint. I guess there are a few others that I responded to more.
-worth a read, particularly if you have enjoyed any of her other work.
-the reactions to the heroine writing the paper for her father seemed a little overblown to me.
-the whole "engagement" seemed a little off to me.
I have mixed feelings about how to rate this book because on the one hand, I liked the premise of the story. The heroine's immediate family has fallen upon hard times and her father is suffering from some sort of dementia/Alzheimer's-like memory loss. Minnie, our heroine, steps up and does what needs to be done around the estate--requiring minor suspension of belief that she's able to do everything she does, but that generally doesn't bother me because I read these for fun--without any of the "oh, but we shouldn't have to because we're nobles" whining. I also really liked that there was love and affection between Minnie and her parents; not every heroine can be an outcast orphan.
On the other hand, there were a few things I struggled with. First, I didn't particularly care for either Minnie or Lord Bailey, nor did I buy the romance between them. Quite frankly, I found Bailey to be an insufferable jerk. Sure, he does some really sweet stuff for Minnie throughout the story (and to be fair, he really does), but he's often condescending and self-centered. Minnie also came off as shrewish rather than strong. They both also have a tendency to give up when things don't go their way and I'm pretty sure I got whiplash from the mood swings. Quite frankly, it wouldn't surprise me if they separated within 5 years.
Second, there is very little distinction between character voices. With the exception of Minnie's parents, everyone sounded almost exactly alike and I had to go back on more than a few occasions to see who was speaking.
Finally, everything was just a little too much. In one story we have the father's deteriorating memory, the useless mother (I'm not sure she was doing anything other saying "Dearest"), the disabled former governess, the over-the-top villain, the rallying friends and family (who apparently couldn't be bothered until Bailey gave them a kick in the collective pants), and the heroine who does everything to run an estate all by herself and somehow still finds time to write three novels and a thesis.
All-in-all, I found this to be a mixed bag for me; but if you're interested in the book, I still recommend you download a sample and give it a try.
